Party Mom
A parent at a soccer game seemed stunned that I offered to host the team party the night before we are also hosting the 8th grade graduation party. I hear this a lot. People intimidated by entertaining. So here’s my crash course in party-giving.
Here’s what you need to do to host a party:
- You need to invite the guests
- You need to know if the guests have a food restriction so no one gets sick
- You need to figure out a menu that’s simple to serve
- You need to have places for people to sit
- Music is a plus. An ipod with a nice playlist is A-OK
- You need to be in a good mood and greet your guests warmly when they arrive
- You need to tell them before they leave that you are so glad they were able to join you
- You need to have fun
Here’s what you don’t need to do to host a party:
- You don’t need to worry about the state of your house
- You don’t need fancy dishes
- You don’t need to impress anyone
- You don’t need to please everyone
- You don’t need to worry about everything being perfect
- You don’t need to serve a complicated or expensive meal
- You don’t need to be a great cook
- You don’t need know how to throw a party
Life is short. Throw a party.
I think all the Moms should Pin this!

Your home page is awful, I hate having to click in order to read – you can’t see enough to know enough to choose and it is hard work and annoying! Then too, the mouse over the page makes it all white out. The best blog layouts are the simple ones where you can see multiple posts by scrolling down to read them.

Wow. Sounds like my blog is not for you Martha. Many people like to be able to find a post on a specific day. I love the layout I’ve chosen and the ability to see multiple posts in one place as opposed to having to scroll endlessly to find something from last week. I do hope, though, that you will re-read your comment and think about how you would feel if someone said that about something you worked on very hard for no compensation whatsoever.

What a gracious and honest answer! I love your quilting work, but I am even more impressed with your people skills!

First time on your blog, but came over on recommendation of Abby Glassenberg. Sure hope you can laugh off that comment because in reading through a few posts, I see that you have much to offer aside from your outsize talent as a textile artist.

Thank you Donna D and Mithra. I don’t think of myself as having great people skills but try whenever someone has said something hurtful to remember that I’m sure others have taken things I’ve written as offensive as well. Although in all honesty I can’t imagine ever telling someone that their “homepage is awful [and] annoying.” Thanks for the kind words.

I have to say I was very impressed with your blog page. It was so very different than any other I have seen on line and it was extremely easy to scan through to find a subject one would want to read.
I was taken aback when I read the comments from the one reader who obviously didn’t feel the same way I did. My mom always said if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. Keep up the good work!!!

Thanks for your perspective Elizabeth. I looked through so many layouts and kept coming back to this one because I thought it was easiest to scan. Sometimes unfamiliar technology brings out the worst in people.

Hi Weeks, I really enjoy reading your blog and your thoughtful view of life and its events. I think that the layout makes it very easy to navigate compared to scrolling through lots of text. It’s been very busy and I’m slowly catching up on my blog-reading ;).
